Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, a country with 10.3 million inhabitants and the hub of a metropolitan area with 2.8 million inhabitants. Daily, the number of the city users increases more than 70%, due to the commuting (from house to work and school). Resident Population and commuters add up to 926 thousand people. (The Lisbon Observatories, 2020)

Transportation options

Flights

Lisbon Airport is the main international gateway to Portugal. It is one of the few airports in Europe located inside a major city. By car, the airport is about 10 minutes from Iscte.

Bus

Bus no. 783: Portela – Aeroporto – Amoreiras

Bus no. 744: Marquês Pombal – Aeroporto – Moscavide

The trip takes about 30 minutes. Bus station: Av. Forças Armadas.

Taxi or Uber

There are two taxi stands within the perimeter of the airport, one at arrivals and the other at departures; Ubers are available at the Departure Terminal or at the parking lot (kiss and ride). The trip takes about 10 minutes (outside rush hour).

Metro (Underground/subway train)

Lisbon Airport has a Metro (subway) station with a direct line to the city centre (see link). The Aeroporto-Saldanha line takes you to downtown Lisbon in about 20 minutes. The campus area is in Entre Campos metro station.

You can use your Debit card (is you have the contactless option) or you can purchase the Navegante electronic travel card, which you can then top up with balance for your journeys with the Metro, Carris (bus), or CP (train). Current prices are here.

As the network diagram below depicts, if you plan on taking the subway from the airport to get to Iscte you will need to change line:

First, RED LINE, direction São Sebastião – (start: Aeroporto – exit: Saldanha)
Second, YELLOW LINE, direction Odivelas – (start: Saldanha – exit: Entre Campos)
